Brief Description

The Food and Beverage industry is a very important sector of Sri Lankan economy as it contributes around 10% of the GDP. However, small and medium enterprises in the Food and Beverage industry in Sri Lanka are becoming less competitive. Cost of productions is increasing due to escalating cost of materials, energy and water. In addition, the industry is not fully complying with international standards and food safety regulations.

The SWITCH-Asia Programme “Sustainable Consumption and Production for SMEs in the Food & Beverage Sector” seeks to address this challenge. The project will facilitate the optimum usage of natural resources (raw materials, energy and water) and improved compliance with international food safety standards.

The main objective of the project is to improve the performance of the Food and Beverage sector in Sri Lanka through promotion of cost effective production techniques and best practices of sustainable production among Small and Medium Enterprises. The activities include:

  • Integrate Environmental Sustainability with Economic Growth and by promoting best practices of SCP among SMEs.
  • Assist SMEs to comply with International Food Safety Standards and improve the Enabling Conditions for successful implementation of  Sustainable Policies in Sri Lanka
  • Conduct environmental assessments for collection of base line information for optimisation of resource utilisation and Networking among businesses through formation of Green Business Clubs

The SWITCH-Asia project "Sustainable Production in the Food and Beverage Industry in Sri Lanka" conducts a training program on Food Safety Management Systems.

SCP offers practical benefits for entrepreneurs

March 2010

In the first weeks of March 2010 members of senior management in the food and beverage industry attended two training courses created to raise awareness about resource efficiency and waste reduction. The training was conducted by the SWITCH-Asia project “Sustainable Production in the Food and Beverage Industry”, and highlighted the practical benefits for entrepreneurs adopting new practices at their production facility.

As a result of the training the enterprises are expected to submit a report on their resource consumption. The report analyses the use of resources in a process flowchart, it includes a description of the plant layout, details the equipment used. The enterprises also analyse production data, including the consumption of water and energy.

The project assists SMEs in the food and beverage sector to optimise the usage of natural resources such as raw materials, energy and water. Project experts are also helping the sector to comply with international food safety standards (ISO 22000:2005/HACCP/GMP certificate). The sector is important to the Sri Lankan economy contributing around 10% of the GDP.
