The Food and Beverage industry is a very important sector of Sri Lankan economy as it contributes around 10% of the GDP. The SWITCH-Asia Programme “Sustainable Consumption and Production for SMEs in the Food & Beverage Sector” seeks to address this challenge. The project will facilitate the optimum usage of natural resources (raw materials, energy and water) and improved compliance with international food safety standards.
The main objective of the project is to improve the performance of the Food and Beverage sector in Sri Lanka through promotion of cost effective production techniques and best practices of sustainable production among Small and Medium Enterprises. The activities include:

March 2010
In the first weeks of March 2010 members of senior management in the food and beverage industry attended two training courses created to raise awareness about resource efficiency and waste reduction. The training was conducted by the SWITCH-Asia project “Sustainable Production in the Food and Beverage Industry”, and highlighted the practical benefits for entrepreneurs adopting new practices at their production facility.
As a result of the training the enterprises are expected to submit a report on their resource consumption. The report analyses the use of resources in a process flowchart, it includes a description of the plant layout, details the equipment used. The enterprises also analyse production data, including the consumption of water and energy.
