Mongolia has a strong history of locally produced goods, based on locally available resources. The traditional, natural sources of locally manufactured products have a distinct potential to meet international standards for eco-products and to be exported.
The SWITCH-Asia “Green Products Development and Labelling in Mongolia” project encourages green product development and eco-labeling for locally produced products in Mongolia. By improving the product quality and manufacturing efficiency through SCP principles, the position of the products can be strengthened on local, national and international markets. This will strongly contribute to local economic development, while contributing to rural poverty alleviation by creating local employment and protecting the environment by using material resources, water and energy more efficiently and reducing air and water pollution and waste.
The Green Products Challenge is at the centre of the project. Companies from given sectors (leather, wood, wool & cashmere, food, handicraft and tourism) are challenged to participate in this green product development contest. Companies are supported on green product development via trainings and workshops not only about cleaner production, eco-design and green labels but also about business planning.
The Conference on green products development in the framework of EU SWITCH-Asia project Green Products Development and Labelling in Mongolia CN/Switch-Asia/003 (153-294), activity 2.7 (Organization of National Fair and Conference), was held in Ulaanbaatar city on 18 of October 2010.
The leader of the EU SWITCH-Asia project "Green Products Development and Labelling in Mongolia" Mr. Jaap van der Meer introduced the project objectives and activities. The local coordinator of Business Advisory Services Programme for Mongolia Financed by the EBRD ETC Fund and Government of Luxembourg Ms. Oyunjarhal introduced possibilities to get consultancy services from the Programme.
2009/2010's exceptionally cold winter in Mongolia did not reduce the motivation of local companies to learn how to improve their processes and products according the sustainable consumption and production and eco design methods. In March 2010 the experts from the project partners IVAM and GrAT, supported by the national partners from Mongolian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Mongolian Agency for Standardization and Metrology completed four training sessions in the capital Ulaan Bataar and the regional aimags of Orkhon, Arvaikheer and Undurkhaan. These trainings were attended by 250 participants from 160 companies and the local support network. Apart from the training, the campaign promoting the Challenge also generated interest finally attracting applications from 300 companies; 150 of which were eligible and taken into the next stage. The best 80 were chosen to receive further instructions and support for preparing their Green Idea Development Report, which they have to submit in August. Out of those 80 companies, 40 with the best reports will be selected and the personnel further trained to prepare their Green Product Business Plan. The project will select potentially successful business plans and support the entrepreneurs to realise the plans including the adoption of cleaner production measures and the production of products with eco-label potential.
