Brief Description

The project “Sustainable Product Innovation in Vietnam, Combodia and Laos” strengthens the innovative power of industry to improve environmental and societal quality of products made in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The project aims to reach out to at least 500 companies in the most relevant sectors such as food processing and food packaging, textiles, footwear, handicraft and furniture. Activities include among others capacity building on project branding and marketing skill trainings for SMEs. Moreover, the project will promote sustainable public policy and procurement with 30 government organizations. The project wants contribute to improved innovative power of industry and improved environmental and societal quality of products made in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. This will be realised by implementing Sustainable Product Innovation (SPI) on a significant scale in these three countries. The outcomes of the action will contribute to a decrease of environmental impact and improve social sustainability aspects connected to products over the whole lifecycle.


The specific objective of the action is that by the end of the action, Sustainable Product Innovation will be a proven approach in at least 500 companies in 5 of the most relevant industrial sectors in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (food processing including packaging, textiles, footwear, handicraft and furniture)

SPIN goes online

The SWITCH-Asia project Sustainable Product Innovation launched its website. Under www.spin-asia.org information on project progress is only a mouse click away.The SWITCH-Asia project aims  to improve the innovative power of industry. It aims to strengthen environmental and societal quality of products made in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. This will be realised by implementing Sustainable Product Innovation (SPI) on a significant scale in these three countries. The outcomes of the action will contribute to a decrease of environmental impact and improve social sustainability aspects connected to products over the whole lifecycle. 

 

The project builds on experiences from ealier projects such as  the success of "Cleaner Production for Better Products - CP4BP" project, which was carried out from November 2007 to July 2009.

SPIN conducts business survey

February 2011

 

Experts under the SWITCH-Asia project “Sustainable Product Innovation” conducted a survey of enterprises and production and processing facilities Quan Hoa district. From 23 to 24 February a delegation of the Cleaner Production Centre of Vietnam (VNCPC) in the framework of SPIN and OneUN analysed flows in a forest product processing enterprises exported (mainly bamboo plywood) in Trieu Son, Thanh Hoa province. The main purpose of the trip included: rapid assessment of business process flows to identify missing elements in the process of sustainable production and thereby learn the strengths, weaknesses and potential of the bamboo industry in this thread. The SPIN project aims to network across the provinces and finding suitable businesses to participate in the SPIN network to support implementation of sustainable product innovation.

A member of the UNIDO-UNE network of National Cleaner Production Centres, VNCPC was founded as a centre of excellence and advocacy in the field of cleaner production.

VNCC will be responsible for the regional coordination of the SPIN project.
Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam (AITCV)
Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam (AITCV)
AITCV takes pride in being the first international institute in Vietnam and the first centre of AIT out of its headquarters in Thailand. AITCV trains masters in the fields of technology, engineering and management.

In SPIN, AITCV will take part in capacity building and support for project beneficiaries.
Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI)
Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI)
LNCCI provides the connection between state organisations and representatives of enterprises, employers and other associations pr private business groups.

LNCCI will facilitate identification and mobilization of SMEs for participation in the SPIN implementation in Lao PDR as well as relevant institutions and candidates for training.
Cambodian Cleaner Production Programme (CCPP)
Cambodian Cleaner Production Programme (CCPP)
CCPP has experience in introducing and promoting cleaner production in Cambodian enterprises.

CCPP is responsible for activities in Cambodia, including organising SI implementation and workshops and the selection process and administrative support of national participants in activities in Vietnam.
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
UNEP’s Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) works with governments and the private sector to achieve responsible behaviour, positive investment and a cleaner environment.

DTIE will be creating national awareness and capacity building within the three project countries’ government on sustainable product policies.
