Supporting a greener and more energy efficient construction industry in Mongolia

Brief Description

Most SMEs in the construction industry cannot afford to invest in research and development (R&D) of greener construction products. Standards exist relating to the type of fly ash  (Fly ash is ash that is produced during combustion of coal. It was released into the atmosphere in the past but is now captured prior to release and is normally disposed of in landfills.)that can be used, but there are no standards registered at the Mongolian Agency of Standardisation and Metrology (MASM) for the production and sale of products made of fly ash. This means that SMEs producing products made of fly ash currently cannot legally sell those products.

 

The overall objective of the action is, through promoting sustainable growth, to contribute to the economic prosperity and poverty reduction in Mongolia and to the mitigation of climate change. The specific objective is to promote sustainable production and sustainable consumption patterns and behaviour in the construction sector. 

 

The projects target groups include:

  • Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the construction industry
  • Vocational training schools and university teaching construction subjects and their students
  • Government bodies responsible for construction and environmental policy and standards

Caritas Czech Republic (CCR)

is the lead applicant who has been operating in Mongolia since 2006. CCR will be responsible for the overall management of the project, implement the activities relating to the green (fly ash) construction products, and work with the partners.

The Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce is the main body representing the Mongolian business community, engaging businesses and trade organisations in a wide range of activities and services. MNCCI strengthens the project with its extended business network and national experience in cleaner production.
Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL)
Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL)
is an independent research body involved since 1966 in the development of solutions to environmental problems on behalf of the business sector of the community. IVl specialises in sustainable buildings, climate and energy, air and transport, resource efficient products and waste, water, and sustainable production.
Caritas Mongolia (CM)
Caritas Mongolia (CM)
is the local project partner and has experience in the field of vocational education. CM will be responsible for organizing the participation of the vocational training schools (VTS) and university in the training sessions, facilitating changes in their curricula, and monitoring the training of students by the teachers.
