Implementing SCP in large scale

A good practice on SCP can only be effective when it is applied by the relevant actors. There have been many successful projects on developing, testing, adapting, and demonstrating SCP tools and methodologies, such as cleaner production, eco-design, environmental management systems, and eco-labels. However, the success of these projects often stays at demonstration level without been replicated by others even though the economic and environmental gains are obvious. Many project implementation experiences have shown that the barriers for wide application of the good practices are mostly non-technical. Good examples on successful implementation of SCP with sustainable and multiply impacts exist.

Examples of the replication approaches include:

  • Developing networks of SCP practitioners  to support the update of sustainable production technologies and practices;
  • Engage service providers to replicate scp practices. (Find out more...)
  • Engaging industrial associations and business networks in implementing SCP practices;
  • Establishing award schemes, or certification schemes for top-runners of SCP practices to gain visibility and competitive advantages;
  • Influencing finance to support SCP practices;
  • Engage all actors along the supply chain to promote SCP.
  • Partnering with consumer organizations and communities, local authorities;
  • Fostering voluntary initiatives and business-public dialogues;

Introducing policies that encourages resource efficiency;

Without effective approaches for replication, good practices on SCP will not reach their intended users and changing the current unsustainable patterns of consumption and production will remain an idea rather than reality.
