World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability

UNEP is organizing the World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 1 to 3 June 2012 on the eve of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) also known as Rio+20. The World Congress will be held in conjunction with the Women Leaders Forum on Social Justice and Governance for Environmental Sustainability.

Based on the successful Global Judges Symposium on Sustainable Development and the Role of Law that UNEP convened on the eve of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002, UNEP in partnership with a number of international, regional and national partners, will bring together at the World Congress Attorneys-General and Chief Prosecutors, Auditors-General (Cour des comptes) and Senior Judges from around the world.

The World Congress is aimed at contributing to the Rio+20 process by promoting global consensus among relevant stakeholders such as those engaged in the development of law, Chief Justices and senior judges, Attorneys-General and Public Prosecutors involved in the interpretation andenforcement of law and Auditors-General whose work will focus on governance and accountabilityissues on the role of law in promoting the goals of sustainable development.

The World Congress will also outline the future actions required to promote the pursuit of sustainable development in the 21st century founded on the rule of law and governance.
