The SWITCH-Asia Network Facility works with the sustainable consumption and production (SCP) projects funded by the European Union (EU) in the SWITCH-Asia programme. It helps effectively share knowledge and disseminate successful project practices and intensify networking between its Asian and European Partners. Communicating SCP tools, technologies and practices to stakeholders and policy makers lies at the centre of the Facility’s activities.
The SWITCH ASIA programme is based on an innovative programme design: 30 projects plus a Network Facilty that links projects and stakeholders. In this set-up the Network Facility is able to distill knowledge of project practices and can promote effective replication approaches. The SWITCH-Asia Network Facility is working to provide support for projects funded under the SWITCH-Asia programme, in order to increase the quality and impact of project activities, and to facilitate uptake of successful results by Asian policy-makers. The Network Facility provides an enabling environment for the projects to share their knowledge and learn from each other. It documents successful approaches and results and publishes them for as broad a dissemination as possible.
In Asia and Europe extensive knowledge already exists on how to implement sustainable consumption and production. Over the last years excellent strategies, technologies, and practices have been demonstrated in Asia to make production and consumption more sustainable. However, neither the good practices, nor the networks have used their potential for big scale replication of SCP. The SWITCH-Asie NETWORK FACILITY is focusing on identifying and disseminating the knowledge to make replication of such practices. Other activities include an annual networking event, project briefings and case studies, booklets on best sustainable consumption and production (SCP) practices, and this, interactive, website where stakeholders are invited to build their own community of practice. All activities of the Network Facility are carried out in collaboration with its partners.
The UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) hosts the Network Facility.

The SWITCH-Asia programme tackles the most pressing environmental challenges in Asia. The EU-funded programme plays a key role for the switch toward more sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns in Asia’s rapidly transforming economies. It funds 30 project across the region beyond the scope of demonstration projects. This is supported by institutionalising synergies and the potential of networks that are being established within the SWITCH-Asia Network Facility.
Scaling-up as a basic principle
The SWITCH-Asia Programme places its primary emphasis on maximising opportunities for broad replication and scaling-up of benefits. Accordingly, the SWITCH-Asia Network Facility requires that case-related knowledge be shared and available among participants for all projects. The Facility links project related knowledge within a strong SCP network that spans borders to promote integration of this SCP knowledge among business, political leaders and other stakeholders.
The overall programme objective of SWITCH-Asia is: To promote economic prosperity and poverty reduction in Asian countries through sustainable growth with reduced environmental impact by industries and consumers, in line with international environmental agreements and processes. The overview of the SWITCH-Asia Programme is available at European Commission website.
The purpose is: To promote sustainable production (i.e. development of less polluting and more resource efficient (energy, water, raw materials) products, processes and services) and sustainable consumption patterns and behaviour in the Asia region, through an improved understanding and strengthened cooperation between Europe and Asia, notably by mobilizing the private sector, i.e. SMEs, retailers, producer, financial institutions and consumer organisations, along with relevant public sector authorities.
