WtE in Rice Milling Sector

Waste to Energy for the Rice Milling Sector in Cambodia

The Cambodian rice milling industry is not competitive with Thailand and Vietnam due to the high cost of processing and logistics of which energy prices are a significant part, lack of sufficient working capital and out dated and inefficient rice milling processing technology that result into low performance and high price.

In this context, available rice husk, once utilized as waste to energy can reduce the rice milling cost substantial and result in more competitive rice milling sector in Cambodia. Hence, waste to energy (WtE) technology would reduce milling cost offering higher prices to farmers and additional investment in dryers would enable Cambodian rice mills to purchase wet paddy rice enabling them to compete with Thai and Vietnamese paddy traders.

The SWITCH-Asia Project Waste to Energy (WtE) for the Rice Milling Sector in Cambodia promotes sustainable production of milled rice through replication of existing WtE rice milling technologies, and promotes sustainable consumption of rice by consolidating fragmented guidelines into a single operational industry standard with policy makers, SME's and financial sector actors together in a multi-stakeholder platform.

To create a rice milling sector that is both competitive and environmentally responsible, the action will guide and replicate the switch from conventional (expensive, fossil fuel generated) energy to renewable Waste to Energy applications.

The target areas are the nine main rice producing and processing provinces of the geographic area surrounding the Tonle Sap Lake (Battambang, Pursat, Kompong Speu, Banteay Meanchey, Kompong Thom, Siem Reap) and the Mekong Flood Plain (Kandal, Kompong Cham, Prey Veng).
