Sustainable Textiles for Sustainable Development in India

The SWITCH- Asia project "SUSTEX: Sustainable Textiles for Sustainable Development in India" sought to promote sustainable production (i.e. development of less polluting and resource efficient products and processes) and sustainable consumption patterns in the crafts and textile industry in India through awareness raising, capacity building and policy research. The growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has had a positive impact on economic development in many countries including India. However, it has led to altered production processes resulting in a range of environment and health hazards.

Under the project, a model eco-friendly textile park has been established which set an example to the other approved textile parks across India. The project bought together a range of partners including technical service providers, textile producer groups and SMEs to conduct action research to provide low cost technological solutions to reducing pollution from textile production activities. On the demand side, the project promoted environment friendly textiles, which impactd consumers' choice/buying decisions, leading to sustainable consumption.
