EMAS Global China: Environmental Management for Companies in China

EMAS China map

Products "made in China" are common today with a daily increasing share of traded goods. However, there are justified concerns about the sustainability of production in China and its negative environmental and social impacts. These concerns affect also the credibility of products "made in China". The proposed action is addressing explicitly production, implicitly also consumption (as unsustainable produced goods can in no way qualify as sustainable goods, independent of how 'green' they might look on the surface) as both sides of the same coin. The proposed action will address Cleaner Production, in particular environmental management systems (EMS).

The objective of the project are:

  • To promote sustainable consumption and production patterns through the use of the voluntary, market-based EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)
  • To enable Chinese environmental consultants to coach
Chinese SMEs towards the implementation of EMAS Global,
which is a new opportunity for China to change towards
 sustainable production and consumption
  • To lead SMEs to EMAS implementation in a convoy
approach, and to foster the uptake of EMAS Global by
company sites in China and along the supply chain in China
and between China and Europe

Duration: 3/2012 - 2/2016

Total budget: EUR 1,234,298.50 (EU Contribution: 80%)
