WBCSD: Business ready to play crucial role in conserving nature

October 28, 2010
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) launched a major policy report with a clear message: “Business can be an effective environmental steward, but only if it's given a place at the policymaking table”.

The report "Effective biodiversity and ecosystem policy and regulation" is a response from business to policy proposals at debate at the meeting of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Nagoya, Japan.

The WBCSD’s report analyses regulations, incentives, market mechanisms and policies already implemented, or under development, aimed at reducing and ultimately halting biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Furthermore, the report examines the important role businesses can play in nature conservation.

One of the key findings of the report was that subsidy reform is long on rhetoric and short on action. Transitioning from capacity enhancing subsidies in sectors which already have excess capacity, towards payments which reward effective ecosystem stewardship will require financial support for sectors and businesses most affected, but must be expedited.
