Sustainable Jute Supply Chains

Known as “the golden fibre” of Bangladesh, the jute sector used to be a pillar of the country’s economy until the 1980s, when it started suffering due to competition from synthetic substitutes and decreased international demand.

Two SWITCH-Asia projects supported farmers, craftsmen and entrepreneurs as the jute value chain slowly picked up momentum again at beginning of the new century.  Women in particular benefit from the rebound of the country’s so-called ‘golden fibre’.
